"Bird Suet"

Day 7 & 8: Making Homemade Bird Suet/Hanging Our Homemade Suet
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCtFRFIj-7U&feature=related

Well, the past two days have been busy, so we had to make this project into a 2-day activity.  Daddy had a good idea that we should make some homemade bird suet, so we looked up some recipies and he went and bought all our supplies for us so we could make some fun bird feed.  We have a lot of little birds around our house, so I'm sure they will love this treat!!

(Day 7)

Our ingredience included: Large bag of Fruit & Nut Blend bird seed, chunky peanut butter, whole grain oatmeal, corn meal, raisins, lard (in place of suet), and a diced apple.

There are alot of recipies out there, but we just decided to wing it and try our own.  In hind sight we should have used a little more lard, because the piece we made for the square suet holder crumbled a bit. But the smaller ones that we put in the net held up good.

How we made it:
  • Heat up 2 cups lard and 1 cup peanut butter until melted (then turn heat off)
  • Add 1 cup corn meal
  • 1 1/2 cup oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup diced apples or one small apple (even half an apple would work)
  • 4-5 cups bird seed mixture
  • If you use plain bird seed that's ok too, you can add nuts or sunflower seeds, etc.
  • Stir together then press firmly into lined muffin pans, let cool or put in fridge
(Day 8)

The next day we used netting and placed 3 pieces in each net then tied them up with string and hung them from trees and various places around the yard. We put most of them by our bird houses that the kids made with grandpa Terry this spring.

We had fun making these for the birds, I hope you are all able to find a good recipie and try it out for yourself...Love The Fritch Clan :)
